In February 2023, Jay Kahn donated $100 million to the San Diego Foundationthe largest-ever gift of its kind to a local nonprofit, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Since then, the foundation has awarded $150,000 in grants to 10 music education nonprofits in San Diego.
The purpose of Kahn's gift is "to elevate human potential by providing a shared sense of pride and belonging to something bigger than any of us can achieve alone," the Union-Tribune quotes the foundation as saying in a press release.
Among the recipients of the first grants from the Jay Kahn Endowment Fund are the San Diego Symphony, which will use the money to expand its music education programs.
"Music is one of those incredible [things] that allows us to learn a lot about listening to each other, a lot about how to work together as a team, and how to express ourselves in many different ways," San Diego Symphony VP of Impact and Innovation Laura Reynolds tells the Union-Tribune.
"It's really about giving every child the opportunity to be a thriving, vibrant individual who can express themselves and participate in this world."
